Movie Picks: 'The Sheep Detectives,' 'Mortal Kombat II' and Other Recommendations

This weekend’s movie lineup offers something for every type of viewer, from a charming family-friendly sheep mystery to bone-crunching video game action with the return of Mortal Kombat. If you're planning a night in instead, we have streaming movie options for you as well.

The Sheep Detectives

Based on a novel, "Three Bags Full," The Sheep Detectives is a cross between Babe and Knives Out. The family-friendly film is a delightful whodunnit with loads of charm and sweetness. The movie balances its sweetness with darker undertones that carry a strong morality tale.

The sheep and human characters are equally entertaining. The stellar voice cast includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and a hilarious Brett Goldstein.

On the human side, Nicholas Braun’s bumbling detective provides an endearing quality and comedy alongside Emma Thompson and Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe).

The Sheep Detectives is perfect family entertainment for all ages.

Mortal Kombat II

Fan favorite Johnny Cage enters the fray in this follow-up to the 2021 movie, and Karl Urban brings spunk and humor.

In a genius move, the tournaments are held throughout the story, keeping the viewer engaged and gamers satisfied.

Aside from Urban’s Cage, Josh Lawson’s Kano stands out as the wisecracking mercenary.  Kano is more likable this go-around.

The heavy CGI environments distract, but the fight sequences keep your eyes focused on the thrilling combat.

Holdovers

The Devil Wears Prada 2

The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites its beloved characters for a timely story about the collapsing publishing industry, with Meryl Streep stealing the show as Miranda Priestly struggles to adapt to the modern workplace. While the sequel is entertaining and nostalgic, it doesn’t quite recapture the sharp magic and energy of the original film.  Full Review
