Production is officially underway on Prime Video’s highly anticipated Tomb Raider series, with Amazon MGM Studios unveiling a first-look image of Sophie Turner as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. The new series reimagines the globally recognized video game heroine for television, promising a fresh chapter in the franchise’s evolution while staying true to its roots in exploration, archaeology, and high-stakes action.
The show is spearheaded by Emmy-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), who serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. Director Jonathan Van Tulleken also executive produces. Behind the scenes, the project brings together Amazon MGM Studios, Crystal Dynamics, Story Kitchen, and Legendary Television — a powerhouse collaboration signaling Prime Video’s ambition to turn Tomb Raider into its next prestige action franchise.
Turner, known globally for her breakout role in Game of Thrones, steps into a role previously defined by some of Hollywood’s most recognizable actresses. Angelina Jolie famously portrayed Lara Croft in the early 2000s films Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, bringing a fierce, larger-than-life edge to the character and cementing her as a pop culture icon. Nearly two decades later, Alicia Vikander rebooted the role in Tomb Raider, offering a grittier, survival-driven interpretation inspired by the modern video game trilogy.
Now, Turner inherits the dual legacy of Jolie’s swagger and Vikander’s grounded intensity. While plot details remain under wraps, the series is expected to blend globe-trotting adventure with character-driven storytelling — an area where Waller-Bridge’s sharp writing and emotional nuance could bring new depth to Lara’s journey.
The ensemble cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein, signaling a large-scale production with international scope.
Since debuting as a video game in 1996, Tomb Raider has become one of the most successful action-adventure franchises in gaming history. With production now underway and the first glimpse of Turner in costume generating buzz, Prime Video is clearly positioning this adaptation as a bold new era for Lara Croft — one that aims to honor the character’s legacy while charting a modern path forward for television audiences.
